LAMDAs' Communication Examinations

What is LAMDA Communication Examinations?

LAMDA is world-renowned and has been offering practical examinations in communication and performance subjects for over 130 years. It is one of the UKs' oldest and most respected awarding bodies. LAMDA exams provide all people with the opportunity to develop the life skills they need to be a success: attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate clearly and present ideas.

LAMDA Communication exams will enable your child to develop in their speaking voice, positive body language and self-confidence. Your child will be required to deliver a prepared speech on a variety of different subjects depending on the grade they are studying. As the grades increase your child will be expected to use visual aids to support their speech e.g. powerpoint.

What will my child gain from LAMDA Examinations?

Although speaking and listening is no longer a compulsory module on the English GCSE syllabus, the English national curriculum reflects the importance of spoken language in pupils’ development across the whole curriculum.

“Spoken language continues to underpin the development of pupils’ reading and writing during all key stages.”

The national curriculum states that pupils should be taught to understand and use the conventions of public speaking, as well as continuing to develop their skills in working collaboratively with their peers to discuss reading, writing and speech across the curriculum. This communication exam will allow your child to do just this. They will develop their spoken language which will help improve their written work and they will be given the opportunity to devise their own speech developing their creativity and independent work.

After completing the examination your child will be awarded a formal qualification in Speaking in Public which will enhance any CV. The higher grades of the LAMDA syllabus (grade 7 & 8) offer students invaluable UCAS points which will be beneficial for KS4 students applying to University and colleges.

“Students being able to articulate their thoughts in an academic, formal way completely connects with their ability to write about the subject and pass examinations. So, through their LAMDA work, their performance in all subjects will be lifted.”

David Benson
Principal, Kensington Aldridge Academy, North Kensington

“My students’ confidence has improved significantly through engaging with this qualification. They did the practical exam today and they came out with massive grins on their faces and had a real sense of achievement. As a teacher you want to see them growing as students and today they were growing in front of my eyes. It’s why you go in for the job: to see young people develop into great human beings.”

Penny Umkalns
Teacher, St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Birmingham

“This qualification benefited our pupils because it forced them to think on their feet, as well as prepare, plan, be flexible, responsive, resilient and reflect on their work.”

Sue Roberts
Head, Prendergast School, Lewisham
